본 총서는 1997년에 한국멀티미디어언어교육학회가 창립된 이래 2011년까지 본 학회 학술지의 수백편의 훌륭한 논문들 중에서 총서발간위원회 및 학술지 편집위원회의 기준에 따라 멀티미디어 언어교육의 핵심 주제를 바탕으로 적합한 논문 133편을 선정·재편집하여 출판한 것이다. 따라서 총서의 논문들은 본 학회가 국내외적으로 외국어 교육과 정보통신기술 관련 분야에서 계속해서 선도적인 역할을 수행할 수 있었던 시금석이자 멀티미디어언어교육 연구의 전형이라고 할 수 있다.
본 학회 초창기부터 우리 회원들은 언어 교수 및 학습에서 풍부하고 다양한 멀티미디어 언어교육 프로그램과 콘텐츠를 활용하여 전통 교실수업에서는 불가능하였던 학습자 중심, 수준별 및 자기 주도적 학습을 바탕으로 추구하는 학습 목표, 특히 외국어 의사소통 능력, 창의력 신장 등을 성취할 수 있는 교육 환경을 만들고자 하였다. 이제 이 모든 것이 현실화되어 가고 있으며 멀티미디어와 정보통신기술의 효율적인 활용에 따라 교육 환경은 오프라인에서 온라인, 즉 이러닝(e-learning)에서 온라인 러닝(online learning), 웹 기반 수업(WBI), 엠러닝(m-learning), 브랜디드 러닝(blended learning), 소셜 네트워크 서비스(SNS) 활용 스마트 교육(smart education)까지 광범위해졌다. 또한 21세기 들어 최첨단 컴퓨터 하드웨어와 소프트웨어 기술로 인하여 언어 평가도 많은 발전을 하였다. 이런 최첨단 기술은 이미 언어 평가 분야의 읽기 및 듣기뿐만 아니라 말하기 및 쓰기 수행 평가 분야에도 적극적으로 활용되어 이 기술을 배제한 언어 평가는 거의 상상할 수 없는 멀티미디어 기반의 언어평가 시대가 도래 하였다. 이와 같이 언어교육, 멀티미디어 및 정보통신 기술을 접목한 많은 훌륭한 연구 논문들이 본 총서에 영문판(Vol. I-II)과 국문판(Vol. III-IV)으로 총 2권에 나뉘어 실려 있다. 이 분야의 많은 전문가, 연구자, 교육자 및 학습자들은 이 총서를 통하여 멀티미디어 언어교육의 이론과 실제에 대한 모든 것, 즉 연구, 개발 및 시행에 관한 과거와 현재의 연구 동향을 파악할 수 있고 앞으로의 연구 방향의 설정에도 많은 도움이 될 것이다.
이번 한국멀티미디어언어교육학회 총서 발간은 국내 저명 언어교육 관련 학회에서는 최초로 시도된 것이며 우리 회원 모두의 꿈과 땀의 결정체라고 할 수 있기에 정말 자랑스럽다.
