[머리말]

This book has grown out of my 20 years teaching phonology all over the world, but more specifically, from my experiences the past few years teaching in Korea. It is intended to provide a general introduction to phonology, particularly in a Korean context, and has been written specifically with the Korean student in mind. Examples are drawn mainly from English and Korean, depending on the topic being studied. Furthermore, additional clarifications are provided at various points in the text where I felt that they might be of use or of interest.
There are many introductory phonology textbooks out there, and all of them have their strengths and weaknesses. Some are too advanced, some are too elementary, some are just too long to fit into a single semester. This book is intended to fill a gap by providing an introduction to phonology intended specifically to be used in a single semester calss in a Korean university. I hope that it will suit the specific needs of students here in Korea in their study of this interesting, but sometimes difficult, subject.
there are many people I should acknowledge at this point. First, I would like to thank all the students who have given me feedback on earlier versions of the manuscript. Next, I would like to thank Pukyong National University for its ongoing support of my work. I would like to especially thank Hye-Hyun Lee and Hae-Won Cheon for our many discussions of issues in Korean phonology and morphology Also, Misun Seo has discussed
many points of English and Korean phonology with me during our informal workshop meetings. Finally, and most importantly, Eun-Sook Kim, who has provided support of all kinds, linguistic, academic, and moral, and has put up with all my annoying habits while writing this book and both before and after.

In order to provide further information concerning errors found in the text, as well as any updates or further information, a website will be established at http://www.stonham.dyndns.org/phonology_textbook. I welcome any feedback?that will enhance the usefulness of this textbook.
