이 책의 초판이 나온 지 십몇 년이 흘렀습니다. 그동안 몇 차례 소폭의 수정을 거쳤지만 대폭 보완된 새로운 개정판을 발간하게 되었습니다.
그동안 대학의 교육환경이 많이 변화하였습니다. 입시제도의 변화로 학생들의 물리학의 학습 수준의 편차가 더욱 커진 것 같고 일반물리학을 공부하는 학생들의 전공도 보다 다양해졌습니다.
물리학은 수백 년 유지되어온 고전적인 영역과 함께 매순간 자연과학과 산업분야의 새로운 지평을 열어가는 첨단적인 영역을 아우르고 있습니다. 따라서 물리교육은 산업 분야의 새로운 과학적 요구에도 부응하여야 할 필요가 있습니다.
우선 학생들의 학습 편의를 위해 37장을 32개로 축소하였으며 장별 내용도 간략히 정리하였는데 주로 고전물리학 부분을 보다 핵심적으로 정리하였습니다. 아울러 현대물리학 영역의 구성도 보완하였습니다.
또한 연습문제의 양을 늘렸습니다. 다양한 전공의 학생들의 물리학을 통한 응용력을 높이기 위해 이전 판의 부족했던 연습문제를 대폭 보강하였습니다.
학생 여러분의 알차고 즐거운 대학생활을 바랍니다.

| 머리말 |

현대는 과학의 시대이다. 원자력 발전, 인공위성, 컴퓨터, 레이저, 자동화 등 과학기술의 성과는 가히 경이적이어서, 생활을 변모시킬 뿐만 아니라 사물을 보는 법, 생각하는 법에까지 지대한 영향력을 미치고 있다. 과학의 분야는 넓지만, 그 모든 과학의 기초는 물리학이라 해도 과언이 아니다. 그 중에서도 일반물리학은 참으로 과학을 이해하고 공부하려는 과학도에게 물리학의 기본원리와 법칙들을 체계적으로 제공하는 기본과목이다.
과학, 기술의 발달과 더불어 일반물리학의 구성내용과 표현양식도 날로 증대되고 다양화되는 추세이다. 저자들은 연구와 교단의 경험을 바탕으로 본 과목의 학습에 조금이나마 도움이 되고 흥미를 유발하여 학습의욕을 증대하는 계기를 마련하고자 본 교과서를 편술하게 되었다. 어느 정도의 성과가 있을지 기대가 되면서도 미숙하고 세련되지 못한 설명이나 표현이 있을 것으로 생각되어 기회가 있을 때마다 바로잡아 나갈 계획이다.
