-Filial Piety in Modern Times in East Asia-

Filial piety has been practiced by Koreans, along with the Chinese and the Japanese, for generations. However, social changes accompanied by industrialization have been undermining the practice of this traditional East Asian value to care and respect for the elderly. The concern necessitates a critical review of the practice of filial piety, a basic moral issue which until recently has not been questioned in Korea, a country that was influenced by Chinese Confusion teachings in filial piety, which it in turn transmitted to Japan.
There has been little investigation of the concept of filial piety in changing times, and virtually no empirical analysis of how filial piety is perceived and practiced in Korea as well as in other countries.
Articles in this book present specific items and measures indicating behavioral as well as attitudinal expressions of filial piety that have been identified through an extensive review of literature, a series of empirical studies of adults and elders, and cross?cultural studies of the expressions of filial piety.
This book offers the readers conceptual tools and guides to practice and research elder care and elder respect in modern times, and to understand the continuity of family support, interdependent relations between generations, and the resilience of filial piety tradition in the East Asian cultural context.


한국인의 부모 부양과 어른 공경
-동아시아의 새 시대의 효-

효도는 한국, 중국, 일본에서 오랫동안 행해졌으나 산업화로 사회가 변화하면서 어른을 공경하고 보살피는 전통적인 동아시아적 가치가 침식되고 있다. 이제는 유교가 처음 발생한 중국과 중국 유교에 영향받은 한국, 그것을 전해받은 일본에서 당연하게 여겨지던, 한번도 의문시되지 않은 기본적 도덕률인 효도에 대한 비판적 고찰이 필요한 때다.
변화하는 시대, 효도에 대한 이론적 연구는 거의 부재하며 또한 효도가 다른 나라에서뿐만 아니라 한국에서 어떻게 인식되고 구체적으로 행해지는가에 대한 경험적 연구 역시 많이 부족하다.
이 책은, 광범위한 문학의 관점과 어른에 대한 일련의 경험적 연구 그리고 효도를 표현하는 비교문화간의 연구작업을 통해 효도를 정의하고, 그것을 통해 외부로 표출되는 효도의 행위와 내면적으로 가지는 태도를 측정 가능한 항목으로 분류·측정하는 구체적 방법을 제시하고 있다. 또한 이 시대의 어른공경과 보살핌을 연구하고 실천하는 데 개념적 도구가 되고 그 방향을 제시해 줄 것이다. 그리고 동아시아 문화의 맥락에서 어른에 대한 가족부양의 책임을 유지시키고 세대간의 상호독립적 관계, 전통의 복원까지 이해하는 데 도움을 줄 것이다.
