한국의 사회복지 발전상을 외국에 소개하는 책으로, 총 6장으로 구성되었다. 6장의 내용은 다음과 같다: 제1장 “한국 사회복지의 문화적 배경,” 제2장 “한국 사회복지 정책의 발전,” 제3장 “노인문제와 대책,” 제4장 “당면한 과제들과 해결방법,” 제5장 “외국과의 대조,” 제6장 “비영리활동의 활성화.” 해외에 한국의 사회복지 발전상을 널리 알릴 만한 글을 심사, 평가해서 선정된 총 28명의 저자들의 글을 편집하여 한국 사회복지의 각 분야를 제시하였다. 또한 종교적 봉사 등 각종 사회단체들이 노인, 어린이, 청소년 등 어려운 사람들을 돕는 다양한 활동을 소개하였다. 한국 사회복지의 발전을 종합적으로 외국에 소개한 책이 거의 전무한 현 상황에서 본서는 많은 학술적 의의를 지닌다.

A primary objective of this volume is to introduce papers and reports describing policies and approaches in selected areas of Korean social welfare. With a relatively small number of writings, we attempt to capture the increasingly diverse and dramatically evolving landscape of social welfare in South Korea, a new member nation of OECD.
Twenty-six researchers, educators and practitioners contributed their valuable works. The volume is organized into six parts. "Culture and Social Welfare," "Policies," "Aging," "Issues and Ways," "Cross-Cultural Perspectives," and "NGOs in Action." As contributors make clear, the study of Korean social welfare is maturing. They document this development in the multidisciplinary application of new knowledge and skills to policymaking and intervention.
Readers will find this volume useful in understanding how certain social welfare issues are addressed and ways in which actions are being taken to resolve the issues in the Korean cultural context in East Asia.
